Education reform has become part of a political imperative in a
number of developed countries around the world. The simultaneous
movement to reform schooling and the administrative structures
which deliver educational services therefore needs to be studied in
order to lay bare its fundamental assumptions. This movement has
been labelled "restructuring" and "reform," although the words
carry different meanings in different countries.; The authors
question why this reconstruction occurred at the same time in
different places. What common themes are emerging in the
restructuring movement? And in the 1990s, where will the movement
lead schooling and what essential changes will it effect? They
explore these questions by examining developments in the USA,
Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.
This casebook provides the most complete treatment available of
constitutional tort actions under 42 U.S.C. 1983 and Bivens. The
elaborate and increasingly controversial doctrines of official
immunity are examined in detail, as is the possibility of direct
governmental liability under Monell v. Dept. of Social Services.
The Fifth Edition also provides complete coverage of the Civil
Rights Attorney's Fees Award Act and its implications for
constitutional tort litigation. The book also explores the relation
of 1983 to the Eleventh Amendment, to the potential overlap with
federal habeas corpus, to the application of doctrines of
preclusion, and to conflicts between state and federal law. It also
provides an introduction to other Reconstruction Civil Rights Acts
( 1981, 1982, and 1985), to modern statutes such as Title VII and
Title IX (which add sex discrimination to previously prohibited
grounds of discrimination), and to structural reform litigation in
schools and prisons.
This book is a collection of a set of lectures sponsored by the
Bathsheva de Rothschild Seminars. It deals with different aspects
of applied physics which are an outgrowth of fundamental research.
The courses were given by experts engaged in their respective
fields. These review articles are intended to fill a gap between
the many research papers that are appearing today in pure science
on one hand, and in applied science on the other hand. It is a
bridge between these two. It aims at the specialist in applied
physics, chemistry and engineering, working in these specialized
fields, as well as at the graduate student, interested in solid
solid state physics, chemistry and electrical engineering. While
this book contains a range of different topics, there is an under
lying logic in the choice of the subject material. The first three
articles, by Drs. Giordmaine, Friesem and Porto, deal with modern
applied optics, which arise to a large extent from the availability
of coherent and powerful laser sources. Two articles deal with
materials, in particular that of Dr. Chalmers on the theory and
principle of solidification and that of Dr. Laudise on the
techniques of crystal growth. The last three articles, by Drs.
Matthias, Doyle and Prince, are concerned with the use of materials
in fields of superconductivity, computer storage and semi conductor
photovoltaic effects. Dr. Rose gives a definitive review on human
and electronic vision, an out-growth of life-long activity in this
field.
From the early 1800s and for nearly 170 years, steam locomotives
were built in Great Britain and Ireland, by a variety of firms,
large and small. James Lowe spent many years accumulating a
considerable archive of material on the History of the locomotive
building industry, from its early beginnings at the dawn of
railways, until the end of steam locomotive construction in the
1960s. British Steam Locomotive Builders was first published in
1975 and has not been in print for some years. This useful and well
researched book is a must for any serious railway historian or
locomotive enthusiast, 704 pages with reference to 350 builders,
541 illustrations and 47 diagrams. The material in this book has
been carefully selected to cover all the leading former steam
locomotive manufacturers in the British Isles.

A second edition of the definitive resource for all those wanting
to use massage therapy to treat pain and injury conditions. Fully
updated and revised Orthopedic Massage has been written for those
interested in understanding and applying massage as an intervention
for soft-tissue disorders. Recent research into the physiological
effects of massage has strengthened the justification for its use
in the treatment of soft-tissue pain and injury conditions.
Orthopedic soft-tissue problems are common among the general
population, whether from sports, occupational activities, or
chronic pain. This text presents a comprehensive and in-depth look
at the physiological nature of these conditions and the massage
treatments most effective for their relief. A particular
contribution this text makes is its validation for the role of
massage in treating orthopedic conditions. In the field of
orthopedics the successful repair of soft-tissue damage is often a
crucial factor in effective rehabilitation. However, most of those
who are trained in the use of massage therapy techniques have
little opportunity to learn about the orthopedic issues involved.
Orthopedic Massage aims to help the clinician understand the
relationship between the soft tissues to which they apply their
techniques and the overall orthopedic disorder affecting their
clients. Although written chiefly for massage practitioners, the
lessons it teaches are relevant to any practitioner who is
concerned with the treatment of soft-tissue injuries. Includes
detailed technical information, extensive illustrations, and
reliable reference material essential to everyday practice.
Provides a comprehensive approach to treatment of common soft
tissue pain and injury. Explains common orthopedic problems in
detail, addressing biomechanics, kinesiology, and anatomy. Provides
an in-depth discussion of the physiologic rationale for soft tissue
treatments and explains those most effective for each condition.
Integrates treatment approaches from across the field and gives
detailed, easy-to-follow steps for their application. Compares
traditional treatments with soft tissue manipulation for each
problem discussed. Clearly links anatomy, physiology, and
biomechanics with clinical practice. Designed for quick and easy
reference with more than 200 high-quality full colour illustrations
and numerous photos of treatment techniques. New clinical case
studies and tips illustrate the techniques discussed. Now presented
in full colour. New step-by-step photographs depict the techniques
described in full detail. Increased artwork and photographs make
learning more visual. Case studies demonstrate techniques and
management in clinical practice Clinical hints and tips throughout.
Greater guidance in treatment strategies to include 'Treatment
Approaches' and 'Rehabilitation Protocol Considerations'.
This supplement brings the principal text current with recent
developments in the law.
